PP PE ABS Sheet Extrusion Machine Line
PP (polypropylene), PE (polyethylene), ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene copolymer) sheet extrusion machine line.
These three materials are all very common general-purpose plastics, but their processing characteristics and product applications are different, so the production line has both high versatility and special design for specific materials.
Core Overview: A universal polyolefin/engineering plastic sheet production line
PP PE ABS sheet extrusion machine lines are highly similar in equipment architecture, typically based on a core combination of "single screw extruder+T-shaped die head+three roll calender". The configuration of the production line is mainly adjusted based on the melting characteristics of the material (such as melt strength, viscosity, cooling shrinkage) and the final product requirements (such as thickness, surface gloss, and whether it is used for hot forming).
To better understand its universality and differences, please refer to the table below

Main products include food trays, cups, folders, disposable cups with industrial liners, moisture-proof pads, corner protectors, advertising substrates, refrigerator liners, car interiors, luggage cases, toys, helmets.
Material characteristics: high melting point (~165 ℃), average melt strength, easy crystallization, large shrinkage rate, wide processing range, high melt strength, very soft, easy to warp, high viscosity, high processing temperature (~200-240 ℃), easy to absorb moisture, easy to degrade
Drying requirements are usually not necessary (unless for special grades) and are not absolutely necessary! Dehumidification and drying machines must be equipped to prevent water vapor from causing cracks and bubbles on the surface of the product.
The characteristics of the extruder are that the screw L/D (length to diameter ratio) is generally above 25:1, and the compression ratio of the mixed shear section screw should not be too large to prevent overheating. The screw L/D should be large (usually>28:1), and the shear should not be too strong to prevent ABS degradation.
Processing temperature moderate (200-230 ℃) moderate to low (180-220 ℃) high (210-260 ℃)
The temperature requirement for the three rollers is high. Higher temperatures are required to reduce internal stress and prevent later shrinkage deformation. Medium. The highest requirement. Accurate high temperature is required to obtain a smooth surface and reduce internal stress.
Cooling requirements require sufficient and slow cooling to reduce crystallization and warping. Uniform cooling is required to prevent warping. Uniform cooling is required.
Rolling can be done for thin sheets or stacked for thick sheets. Thick sheets are usually stacked directly, while thin sheets can be rolled up.
The core adjustment point controls the cooling rate and roll temperature to manage crystallinity and dimensional stability. By utilizing its high melt strength, thicker sheets can be produced. Strict drying and mild processing temperature are key to ensuring quality.
The main components of a universal production line
A complete PP PE ABS sheet extrusion machine line typically includes the following units:
1. Raw material processing system
·ABS specific: Dehumidification dryer is an essential equipment. The moisture content of ABS pellets needs to be reduced to<0.02% -0.03%.
·PP/PE: Usually only a simple hopper dryer (hot air drying) is needed, mainly to preheat the raw materials and prevent water vapor condensation. For extremely high-end applications, PP may also require dehumidification and drying.
·Vacuum feeder: Automatically transports raw materials from packaging bags to the drying hopper or extruder hopper.
2. Extrusion system
·Single screw extruder: This is the most mainstream and economical configuration.
·Screw design: Choose different screw structures (compression ratio, mixing elements) based on different materials.
·PP/PE: Using universal screws or screws with barrier sections, it has good plasticizing and mixing capabilities.
·ABS: Using low shear, slow compression screws to prevent overheating and degradation.
·Length to diameter ratio (L/D): usually between 25:1 and 32:1, the larger the L/D, the better the plasticizing effect, and the more precise the temperature control.
·Screen changer: Continuous or manual screen changer to filter impurities in the melt and ensure product quality.
·Gear pump (optional): For high-end applications, adding a melt gear pump can greatly stabilize the discharge pressure and obtain products with better thickness tolerances.
·T-shaped die head (flat die head):
·The hanger style die is a standard configuration, ensuring that the melt is evenly distributed across the entire width.
·The mold lip is equipped with a fine adjustment mechanism (usually a thermal expansion bolt or manual bolt), which is used to finely adjust the lateral thickness distribution of the sheet online or offline.
3. Shaping and cooling system
·Three roll calender: the core shaping unit of the production line.
·Function: Flatten, shape, control thickness, and impart surface gloss (mirror roller) or texture (mute roller) to the molten billet coming out of the mold.
·Temperature control: This is a key adjustment parameter for processing different materials. Each roller is an independent temperature controlled "hot oil" or "water circulation" system, with an accuracy requirement of ± 1 ° C.
·PP: The roller temperature requirement is relatively high (such as 60-100 ° C) to reduce later shrinkage.
·ABS: The highest roller temperature (e.g. 80-110 ° C) is used to achieve a high gloss surface.
·Cooling traction frame: The sheet material that has been preliminarily shaped by three rollers enters multiple sets of cooling rollers and is further uniformly cooled to room temperature.
4. Auxiliary and winding system
·Online thickness gauge (beta ray or infrared): Real time scanning and display of the thickness curve of the entire width of the sheet, which is a key equipment to ensure quality and high yield. It can be linked with the lip adjustment system to achieve automatic control (ATC).
·Edge cutting device: Cut off irregular thick edges on both sides.
·Tractor and Winder:
·For PE and thin PP/ABS sheets, a center/surface winding machine is used to roll them into large rolls.
·For thick PP/ABS sheets (such as>2mm), use a fixed length cutting saw and an automatic stacker to directly cut the sheets and stack them.
5. Edge material recycling system
·The cut edge material is instantly crushed by an online crusher, and then automatically mixed back into the main extruder in proportion by a recycling feeder, reducing costs.
